What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder that is a loss of bone osteoid that reduces the bones integrity. This means that the bone isn’t as strong as it used to be! In the U.S. alone osteoporosis causes 2 million fractures annually!  Fractures that occur can be in your spine called vertebral fractures, hip fractures, and pelvic fractures!  Sometimes osteoporosis is asymptomatic, meaning, you don’t have symptoms, it may present with back ache, vertebral fracture, or  loss of height.

Osteoporosis is caused by a variety of factors:

  • Hormone Deficiency
  • Hormone Excess
  • Immobilization= lack of exercise
  • Tobacco
  • Alcoholism
  • Malignancy
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • Genetic Disorders
  • Medications
  • Disease Processes
